So, Jalopjeeps article got me thinking about how much I miss driving my jeep (More than normal) and how getting to enjoy that ride to and from work made my day. It also got me thinking about the little things that I used to supplement the experience. I know most people add music. but is there anything else you guys do? My personal routine involved my Cherokee, A Tobacco Pipe some McClelland Tobacco and some Old jazz like Ray Charles or Errol Garner. The combination of the three would just make anything that could have happened during the day seem that much less stress full and revitalize me for job 2 or job 3. So what do you guys do to make that daily drive that much better?

I may have to don the flame suit for this, but I do miss smoking a bowl or cigarette in my car. Absolutely no smoking in the Dart, but all my other cars I used to smoke in.

Fuck it, enjoy your ride the best you can while you can because Life is too short. I am usually really anal about some things but smoking in my car has never been one of those things. I guess its because I grew up with two smokers. That and Pipe tobacco smells fantastic, you cant hate on that.

Podcasts. Everytime I am in the car. I have three that I listen to the most.
Walking the Room: Comedy podcast with Greg Berhendt and Dave Anthony. Released every monday morning, it's gets me to and from work every Monday. These guys just sit down and talk for an hour every week and it is usually hilarious. And sad, and gross, and a few other things
Dan Carlin's Harcode History: he doesn't really follow a release schedule, but he is consistently the best history podcast out there. Each release from him is several hours long and in audiobook format, so sometimes it'll take me a week or a bit more. Love this podcast, it's like every time I get in the car I get a history lesson. His Muli part series on the downfall of Rome and another on the Mongols is just fantastic.
Joe Rogan Experience: This one varies depending on the guest. But he still set the bar for podcasts.
These podcast make me want to drive more when I am alone. IT is nice and quite and I can have a laugh or learn something.

I listen to NPR. It's soothing enough not to take my attention off of driving, yet keeps me informed of things and makes me smarter. Also SciFri is the best day.

I am very much a cigar-in-the-car guy. It relaxes me during difficult drives in Austin traffic, and gives me something to do on long road trips by myself. I also use the opportunity of long drives to dig deeply into my music collection and listen to entire albums that I wouldn't otherwise take the time to listen to. And for late night drives when I need to stay awake, there's no substitute for Car Talk podcasts.

I usually play music on my way to work, usually some black metal or similar. On my way home I usually listen to videos of this guy who plays Minecraft (yes, listen to videos, plug the iPad into my stereo and flip it upside down so I can't see the screen), well it's really one of thwo guys, either Paul Soares Jr. or Guude boulderfist. I know that may sound strange, but these guys are really great, Paul has this incredible soothing voice, and he talks about life and what not while he plays, Guude on the other hand is just damn funny and he's got the most infectious laugh I've ever heard.
Oh and Pipes ROCK.. I never smoke in my car though.

I need to look into this. When I was younger (early 80's, mind you) there was a radio program on the local rock station at midnight called "Alien Worlds." I don't remember much of it, but I do recall staying up late and getting under the blanket with my clock radio to listen to it. I would imagine that many of these sorts of programs are available in podcast form. I also wonder if my boys would be interested in something like this, or a radio play version of Star Wars.

A rock station used to do it where I used to live. Alas, since moving 3 time zones the start time (of 10pm their time) is now 1 am my time, so it's a lot less convenient.

I think my mom sent me this link a few years ago, and I had vague recollections of it as I was typing my reply. Thanks for the refresher! We've got a 3.5 hour family drive coming up in a couple of weeks, and I'll see if my boys will listen to some of these. Of course, they'll likely be more interested in their DS.

I enjoy Dan Carlin, but those podcasts could easily be 1/3rd their length and just as informative. He loves to wander. Sometimes he spends an hour or more before I can even figure out what the hell the latest episode is about.
The other podcasts on my regular rotation are "Judge John Hodgman," "Jordan, Jesse, Go," "Smodcast," and "Fringe Average" (non-baseball nerds need not apply for that last one, admittedly).

I drive about 100 miles daily so there is usually plenty of time for a smoke. The Photo is mine, There are a couple places that I go for tobacco, There are two local shops Watch city cigar in Framingham Ma has a great selection and the guy there really knows his tobacco and L.J. Peretti in Boston which has been around for 140 years. If I can't make it to either I use Pipesandcigars.com. The one shown above is Blue mountain made my McClelland. Its in my top 3 favorites.

Eh, my girlfriend doesn't smoke so I always felt bad subjecting her to that anyway. It's not the smell in the car that bothers me, but the burn marks. Be as careful as you want with a cigarette, it's bound to happen eventually, be it you or a passenger. I want to keep the Dart fresh.

Haha, you're not wrong about Carlin. I enjoy listening to him speak, so it doesn't bother me too much, but you are definitely right.
I didn't know Hodgman had a podcast, and haven't heard of Jordan, Jesse, Go. I'll give them both a try. I was super into Smodcast for the longest time, then just kinda got bored of it. Still a fan of Smith though.

my remarks were directed towards the commentators in general, not this post. chilling out smoking a tobacco pipe and letting the miles roll by is badass, and a great stress reliever. now all the 420 blaze it fags have went all bob marley in the comments and i hate that shit so smoke a fat one and please excuse my mistake in not making that apparent in my initial post.

Hodgman is hilarious. He poses as a "fake internet judge" (his words) and has people bring random disputes to him. He then explores the problem with them (while looking for ways to mock them) and then renders a decision on who is right and who is wrong. It's pretty hilarious and always one of the highlights of my week.
I discovered Jordan, Jesse, Go through Hodgman, actually. Jesse Thorn is the "bailiff" on Judge John Hodgman and also owns the podcast network that puts out the Hodgman show. He also hosts a show called Bullseye on NPR each week and is generally very funny and a great interviewer. Jordan, Jesse, Go is a show he does with his friend and comedian Jordan Morris and a guest each week. There is no set topic or anything, its just 3 people generally bullshitting and being funny.
I know what you mean on Smodcast. It's pretty hit and miss these days since Smith went full pothead. I generally skip any show that Mosier isn't on now, as I find him to be the saving grace usually. That being said, it is still occasionally hilarious.

Always good every once in a while, but I never buy it since it was my first dip and made me puke. I had at least 6 pieces of pizza and decided to try dipping at football camp my sophomore year of high school. A friend of mine always dipped and threw in some straight monster lips, so I asked for some and took about half of what he did...
After feeling almost drunk for a while, I had to head to the restroom and puke up that pizza. I kept swallowing that little frog you get in the back of your throat when you're a little stuffed up and dipping and wasn't expirenced so I lost it. What did you try first?

it just so happened that every single person who has advocated the recreational use of weed in my personal life is narcissistic, self serving, lazy, and a complete douchebag. weed just makes you want to get high all the time. sure it might have medicinal properties but for every bob marley poster having, rasta beanie buying, dreadlock growing moron out there, i will fight on forever. i will fight them in the pac-suns, i will fight them in the chip isle at walmart, i will fight them in the handicapped spots, i will fight them in the college campus lounge, i will never surrender!

a bunch of my baseball playing buddies always had grizzly wintergreen (pouches) and made me throw one in one day.
